
Age Verification on Social Media: How Meta Plans to Enforce Teen Restrictions
As governments worldwide intensify efforts to impose stricter regulations on teen access to social media, the challenge of enforcing age restrictions persists. While platforms like Meta have established minimum age limits, research indicates that numerous underage users successfully circumvent existing verification systems. A notable 2022 study by Common Sense Media revealed that screen time for children aged 8 to 12 continues to rise, with a considerable portion of that time spent on social media. Furthermore, TikTok disclosed that approximately one-third of its U.S. users are under 14 years old, underscoring the inadequacy of current age-gating measures.

This tool, developed by Yoti, analyses facial features to provide an estimate of a user’s age, aiming to create a more accurate verification process without the need for sensitive personal documents. Recently, Meta reinforced its commitment to this approach in its Help Center documentation, stating, “Facebook contracts with Yoti, a third-party age verification service, to ensure an age-appropriate experience for our users.” Yoti’s methods are verified by the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS), a body recognised for its expertise in digital age verification that is advising the Australian government on forthcoming social media restrictions. As a result, it is possible that Meta will soon broaden the use of video-based ID verification to additional regions.
Looking towards the future, Meta is also exploring the use of Face ID technology for high-profile users, aiming to enhance security against impersonation and scams. While facial recognition remains a contentious issue due to privacy concerns, it could evolve into a widely accepted method for age verification on social platforms. If governments enforce age restrictions via platforms like Meta, users may soon be required to provide Face ID or other forms of biometric verification to access social applications. While some individuals may view this as an invasion of privacy, others argue it could be the most effective strategy to prevent underage users from accessing restricted platforms.
