Meta Expands Facial Recognition for Scam Protection & Account Recovery

Meta is rolling out its facial recognition technology to help high-profile users more effectively combat scams and recover their accounts. Following initial tests in select regions, the company is now expanding its initiative to the UK, EU, and South Korea, aiming to better refine its security measures.

 

In October 2024, Meta introduced these facial recognition tools specifically designed to detect “celeb-bait” scams, where deceitful advertisers misuse the images of public figures. The new system cross-references faces in advertisements with a database of verified high-profile users, flagging unverified promotions to enhance user safety. This extended rollout means more public figures in the targeted regions will receive in-app notifications, enabling them to opt into an additional layer of protection.

 

In addition to scam detection, Meta is also using facial recognition for secure account recovery. This new method offers an extra verification step, simplifying the process for users who need to regain access to their accounts after a hack or login issue. According to Meta, the company has thoroughly vetted these measures through a comprehensive privacy and risk review process, implementing critical safeguards. These include providing educational information about how the system works, ensuring that participation is optional, and committing to deleting users’ facial data as soon as it is no longer necessary.

 

The return to facial recognition technology represents a significant shift for Meta, particularly since the company discontinued its Facebook face-matching tools in 2021 due to privacy concerns. Although the new technology aims to bolster security and prevent scams, it raises ethical questions, especially in light of previous controversies involving facial recognition, such as its application in surveillance programs in China. To address privacy apprehensions, Meta has emphasised that face data will be deleted promptly when it is no longer needed, participation in the program is optional, and the system will not be misused for other purposes. Still, privacy advocates remain wary of potential misuse.

 

Beyond security enhancements, Meta is also making strides in developing photorealistic avatars for its virtual reality and metaverse projects. Recently, the company unveiled a method to create highly detailed avatars from just four selfies, indicating that user-generated facial data could play a significant role in future digital interactions.
