Meta Partners with Norden to Drive Maritime Decarbonisation
Meta has partnered with Danish shipping company Norden to support the sustainable use of maritime fuel, marking a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of global supply chains. This collaboration is seen as crucial for advancing environmentally responsible shipping practices. Norden’s Chief Operating Officer has expressed pride in including Meta among its growing list of customers who are dedicated to decarbonising maritime supply chains. The commitment shared by both companies to high standards and sustainable freight practices is further demonstrated through their participation in the Book and Claim Community’s Governing Board.
The Book and Claim Community aims to create a unified framework for tracking emissions reductions across transportation. Norden’s innovative Book and Claim solution utilises biofuels on its vessels, allowing the resulting emissions reductions to be attributed to third-party customers like Meta through a verified chain of custody system. The biofuel employed in Norden’s operations is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), providing an impressive 80-90% lifecycle emissions reduction compared to traditional marine fuels. As a drop-in substitute, this biofuel can be used by existing vessels without requiring any modifications. An independent verifier authenticates the emissions reductions, which are then recorded in an external registry to ensure transparency and credibility.
Meta is committed to achieving net zero emissions across its value chain by 2030, and the partnership with Norden aligns perfectly with its broader sustainability goals. Addressing emissions throughout the supply chain—including those related to the maritime transportation of goods—is essential for reaching this target. Innovative solutions like Norden’s are considered vital in helping companies decarbonise at the necessary pace to meet climate goals.
Norden’s Book and Claim solution is being positioned as a transformative approach for industries reliant on maritime transportation. It enables companies such as Meta to credibly invest in decarbonisation efforts. By merging advanced certification processes with innovative fuel use, Norden establishes a benchmark for sustainable shipping. Through collaborations like this, both companies aim to accelerate the global transition toward greener supply chains, providing a model for other industries to emulate.
